Precut Mats and Frames

The Mitered Corner, a Green Works member, has been "precycling" and "recycling" long before it became fashionable to do so. We prevent useful materials from filling our waste disposal stations by "precycling" discontinued and leftover mat board and moulding into precut mats and frames. These "precycling" products are sold at special reduced prices, and are terrific bargains that get snatched up quickly. We have a bargain table on which you can find mat fallouts for craft projects, odds and ends frames, conservation glass scraps, and assorted leftover wonders.

We carry over 3,000 precut mats fashioned from leftover mat board in sizes that fit pictures from 2 x 3 inches to 16 x 20 inches. Some of our precut mats are in unusual shapes such as square, panoramic, oval, circle, octagonal and heart shapes.

Our precut frames (many of which we make ourselves) come in sizes from 4 x 5 inches to 24 x 36 inches. We carry standard sizes, and some odd sizes (such as squares). Because many of these frames are made from discontinued moulding, they are usually one of a kind and allow our customers to select a look that is uniquely their own. We also carry several lines in ovals, circles, and fan cases. Sectional frames in wood and metal are available. In addition, we carry Baby Prints and Paw Prints, a unique framing shadow box that allows you to display a favorite photo of your child or pet along with their hand or paw print.

What is an Archival or Museum Quality Mat Board?

There are two kinds of mat boards that are considered to be archival. The first is rag board, which is made from 100% cotton. Cotton is acid and lignin free, and has been used for decades in museums, galleries, and frame shops to protect artwork. Crescent Rag Mats, made from cotton, come in a wide array of colors, core colors, surfaces, and textures to fit any framing situation.

The second kind of archival mat board is alpha cellulose board, a natural cellulose product that has been chemically altered to remove the acid and lignin, cleaned, bleached, and buffered to remain stable and safe for artwork. Bainbridge Alphamat Artcare Mat Board, made from alpha cellulose, incorporates micro chamber technology which is intended to trap pollutants in the air that may damage artwork, especially photographs. Like Crescent, Bainbridge Alphamat Artcare Mat Board comes in a variety of colors and textures.

What is Conservation Glazing?

Ultraviolet light can cause color loss, paper embrittlement, and deterioration of artwork, as does visible light. While it is not possible to block out visible light, it is possible to filter out much of the UV spectrum by using conservation glazing. Conservation glazing has a coating that filters out 97% of the UV spectrum in the 300 to 380 nanometer range, the range that conservators are most concerned about.

We carry TruVue TruGuard conservation glazing in Conservation Clear, Conservation Reflection Control, and Conservation Museum Glass. Conservation Clear transmits 91% of light to artwork, while blocking 97% of the UV in the 300 to 380 nanometer range. Conservation Reflection Control is a single sided etched non glare glass that also blocks 97% of the UV. Museum Glass is an anti-reflective glass that transmits 97% of the light to the artwork while blocking 97% of the UV.

We also carry TruVue regular clear glass and non glare glass. These products block out about 40% of the UV spectrum in the 300 to 380 nanometer range.

No matter which type of glazing you choose, it is important to remember that all light can fade and deteriorate artwork. Some parts of the spectrum can be filtered out through the use of ultraviolet glazing, other parts of the spectrum can be controlled by placing the artwork in low light situations such as a hallway or bedroom. The less light your picture gets, the less fading and deterioration will occur.
